OnStar Helps Recall Efforts

September 01, 2005 -- GM vehicle owners with OnStar service who fail to take their vehicles in for recall repairs after 60 days will receive a reminder when they push the blue OnStar button in their vehicle for service.

The new service, provided by OnStar advisors during non-emergency service request calls, includes an offer to connect the driver to a dealer to schedule repairs. The advisors will not have specifics of a given recall, but can refer customers to the appropriate GM customer assistance center for more information.

This recall service reminder is part of GM's ongoing efforts to help increase recall completion rates, said Gay Kent, General Motors Director of Product Investigations. OnStar reminders are a follow-up to the voluntary mailing of reminder post cards to vehicle owners who have open recalls 60 days after receiving their notification letter identifying a safety defect or noncompliance with a federal safety standard.

Where necessary, GM sends multiple mailings to owners who have not acted on earlier notices and reminders.

"We want to remind owners that complying with a recall notice is very important," Kent said. "Recall notices are not junk mail that should be set aside or thrown away."
