Preventative Health Advice for Travelers

A growing number of travelers are concerned about the state of health and sanitation at tourist attractions and travel hotspots, according to a recent survey by Briggs & Riley Travelware. Research by the travel company showed that well-traveled professionals and vacationers are more and more worried today about the health conditions in airports, planes, hotels, trains, concert halls and theaters.

Travelers looking to stay healthy and prevent unnecessary colds and infections can take simple preventative health measures during their next trip. To prevent flare ups of colds, allergies, skin ailments and stomach disorders, follow these healthy travel tips on your next business trip or vacation.

Preventative Health Travel Tips

Keep the Bed Bugs Away
Never place luggage on a hotel bed when you arrive and leave for the day. Recent reports have shown that bed bugs exist even at the most luxury hotels. If bags are left on the bed, bed bugs can seep into luggage and clothing.

Wrap, Wrap, Wrap
TSA security guards go through hundreds of bags each day and come in contact with many germs. Try wrapping your clothes in pressed plastic bags that zip up to ensure your belongings remain untouched and sanitary. Also, pack extra large plastics bags for items that may be damp or wet.

Wipes To The Rescue
Even when traveling without the children, always take a package of anti-bacterial wipes for use everywhere including restrooms, airplanes and cars. These wipes are invaluable for spills, stains and germs.

Think and Plan Ahead
Copy important pages of your passport and keep them in your luggage and on you at all times. Also, bring slip-on shoes to wear in hotel rooms.

Bring Carry-On Essentials
Sleep better on the plane and in the hotel with ear plugs. Also, bring nose drops, chapstick, vapor rub and cold pills if needed. Large crowds breed germs and make getting sick easy. Also, a warm shawl for women or a sweater for men is always a good idea for staying warm on the plane. Try avoid using what can be germ-ridden airplane blankets.

Carry Duplicate Prescriptions
Always carry your prescription medicine and eyeglasses in your carry-on bag. Also, make sure to bring your prescriptions in your carry-on as well. In a rush you might misplace your drugs or glasses, and you'll be able to replace them with less hassle if you have the prescriptions. Additionally, consider throwing a change of underwear in your carry-on bag. If you're stuck for weather delays or security reasons, you may end up spending the night at an intermediate point without access to your checked bags.

According to Jim Lahren, vice president of marketing at Briggs & Riley, travelers often forget these important preventative tips when packing for travel.
