Healthiest Fast Food for Busy Travelers

by Dr. Jo Lichten

Your stomach is growling. You know you should look for healthy food, but the neon lights of the fast food restaurants draw you into their hold like a magnet. Stop worrying; there's something healthy at every fast food joint. Here's my vote for the healthiest (and still tasty) fast food.

Best breakfast sandwich: McDonald's® Egg McMuffin.

If you're looking for a protein boost in the morning, check out McDonald's® Egg McMuffin. The egg, Canadian bacon, and cheese are neatly tucked in an English muffin. [300 calories, 12 gms fat].

Best chicken sandwich: KFC® Tender Roast Chicken and KFC® Honey BBQ Sandwich

If you're bored of grilled chicken sandwiches, try my favorites at KFC®. Their Tender Roast Chicken sandwich is moist and flavorful [270 calories, 5 gms fat without sauce]. KFC®'s Honey BBQ sandwich has a sauce that is thick enough that you can eat it on the road without making a mess. [310 calories, 6 gms fat]

Best burger: Burger King's® Mustard Whopper Jr.

Burgers aren't as low in fat as grilled chicken, but remember, a healthy lifestyle includes your favorite, not-so-healthy, foods in moderation. If you're in the mood for a burger, this is your best bet because it's not oversized, yet not as small as those tiny burgers in the kid's meals. If you request the "Mustard Whopper Jr", they'll use mustard instead of mayo to knock off 80 calories. [310 calories, 13 gms fat]

Best diet drinks: Chick-Fil-A® diet lemonade

If you don't like the calories of sodas (about 100 calories for the 8oz small or 300 calories for the large) but don't appreciate the taste of diet drinks, check out Chick-Fil-A® diet lemonade. It's sweet, yet tart — and caffeine-free! [9oz (small) serving has 25 calories, 0 gms fat]

Healthiest wrap: Chick-Fil-A® Chargrilled Chicken Cool Wrap™

Tired of the same old burger bun? Chick-Fil-A® Chargrilled Chicken Cool Wrap™ consists of chargrilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, and a bit of Monterey cheese tightly wrapped in a large tortilla. [390 calories, 7 gm of fat without the sauce].

Best chili: Wendy's® Chili

Chili doesn't sound like it can possibly be healthy, but it is! This tomato-rich chili is chock full of beans and ground beef. [large cup = 310 calories, 10 gms fat. Cheddar cheese adds another 70 calories, 6 gms fat]

Best sub: Quizno's® Honey Bourbon Chicken

Want something different? Quizno's® subs are toasted and served warm. Their Honey Bourbon Chicken sandwich is made with chicken strips, veggies, and a zesty sauce. [329 calories, 6 gms of fat].

Best Chinese: Jack-in-Box® Chicken Teriyaki Meal

Looking for a filling, low-fat meal? Try this scrumptious meal in a bowl. [550 calories, 3 gms fat].

Best Italian: Fazoli's® Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

In the mood for pasta? While Fazoli's offers an even leaner Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce, I prefer their rich meat sauce. [small = 450 calories, 8 gms fat]

Best Mexican: Taco Bell® Bean Burrito

Taco Bell® also has a low-fat Chicken Soft Taco, but my favorite is their Bean Burrito. It's hefty and filling. [370 calories, 12 gms fat]

So the next time you have to grab a bite on the go, don't feel guilty. Just order the healthiest food you can get. There are plenty of choices.
