2012 Crossover Utility Vehicle Buyer's Guide written by Martha Hindes

2012 CUV Buyer's Guide

by Martha Hindes

For a long time anyone wanting something other than an auto, usually had to choose a pickup truck. Then came sport utility vehicles that could climb rocks, serve as overnight sleeping quarters and brush off a foot-deep mud puddle with impunity. But as Americans got older and their backsides got a bit broader, comfort began to creep in as requisite amenity and the crossover, cute ute, or CUV (for crossover utility vehicle) was born. Boy did it take off.

Now crossovers -- some big and some small -- have proven to be one of the most popular types of vehicles around since they do so many things so well. They serve as autos when needed, or cargo haulers if desired. They don't have the stigma that minivans sometimes carry. And they are the one vehicle that's usually just plain fun to drive.
